Police Reform Bills on the Rise Across the Country
On Tuesday, Jan 12, 2021, a police reform bill passed unanimously through the House committee, 11-0 at the Indiana Statehouse. The legislation deals with practices like a chokehold, body cameras, and de-escalation training. In a show of support, several law enforcement agencies throughout the state came to testify in favor including the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association, Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police, and Indiana State Police. The bill will now move to the House floor for consideration.
Indiana is one of the many states currently addressing police reform with the legislation in the wake of heavily publicized police-involved incidents in the last few years. While promising, the amount of legislation introduced throughout the country is just the first step in bridging the divide between law enforcement and the communities they are charged with protecting and serving.
